Black American Soldier
This is one of the three pastel portraits that are in the Eugène Burnand Museum at Moudon and omitted from the Crété book. There is no commentary because only those in the Crété book have one. The wording at the bottom of the picture says "Senegalese", a term used at the time to indicate west African origin. It is fairly clear that this soldier is wearing a USA army uniform and the inscription is therefore incorrect. Pastels 39 an 40 are or true Tirailleurs Sénégalais, (Senegalese Riflemen).
